There's a Difference between Being in Love and Creating a Long-Term Loving Relationship

Love happens, but long-lasting committed relationships don't - they can only be the result of mutual effort based on a clear understanding of what a relationship is about.

It can be very confusing, because falling in love involves the release of endorphins in the brain that create the exquisite intoxication that comes with falling in love. In that state, there is total surrender to the feelings, and discernment and practical matters simply go out the window.

But, as with all highs, there must be a return to earth (it is estimated that the bliss of falling in love lasts 3 to 18 months). The trick is to use the power of those magical feelings as a foundation for the practical work of constructing a long-term loving relationship.

If you are considering marriage or a domestic partnership, you will want to have clarity about how a relationship works and the skills and tools you will need to keep it working.

Having doubts? Try answering these questions:

  • Are your core values compatible?
  • Are you sexually compatible and comfortable talking about sex with each other?
  • Do you share common interests?
  • Do you allow for separate interests?
  • Are you confidant you can balance these interests?
  • Can you verbalize your expectations of yourselves, each other, in-laws and mutual friends?
  • Do you know how to create a plan?
  • Have the two of you set goals for your life together?
  • Do you know how to negotiate and resolve issues?
  • Have you created a plan for managing finances?
  • How will you negotiate chores and responsibilities and develop healthy routines?
  • Have you discussed having children?
  • If you want children, are your parenting styles compatible?

I have had the great privilege of guiding many couples toward the relationships they want, and would love to do the same for you. Let's talk to see how I can help you. Call me at 305-754-7246, or send an email to mara@bridgeoflife.com.
